The Dynamic Ceramicists of Turning Earth
Meet the makers and teachers from Turning Earth studios who will be sharing their passion for clay, showcasing and selling their work, as well as teaching throwing and hand-building taster workshops at Old Spitalfields Market as part of London Craft Week
Turning Earth’s ceramics studios have been offering accessible, open-access clay spaces to potters of all talents for over a decade.
Now with studios in Hoxton, Highgate, Tottenham and Leyton, London Craft Week 2024 sees some of the professional makers and teachers from Turning Earth join us at Old Spitalfields Market for three days of sharing their passion for clay, showcasing and selling their work, as well as teaching throwing and hand-building taster workshops.
Here are just some of the ceramicists taking part…
Ditte Blohm @blohm.studio
Ditte Blohm is a Danish artist based in London who uses her studio as a diary to express her feelings and thoughts. Each sculpture is an inner dialogue with herself captured in physical form.
Ditte will be joining Turning Earth in the Market on Thursday 16th May.
Elio Ashworth @jaak.london
JAAK is a multi-faceted visual arts practice from Elio Ashworth, combining photography, videography, and ceramics.
Elio will be joining Turning Earth in the Market on Thursday 16th May.
Maria Sole Giglio @sole.ceramics
Maria Sole Giglio is a self-taught ceramicist, who began with hand-built sculptural objects, from vessels to lamps, then transitioned to wheel throwing. Inspired by nature and materials, her sculptural vases celebrate textures using porous stoneware or porcelain.
Maria will be joining Turning Earth in the Market on Friday 17th May.
Clare Spindler @clarespindler
Clare Spindler’s creative focus is functional ceramics in stoneware and porcelain. Drawn to streamlined, architectural shapes in muted, natural tones, Clare also enjoys the occasional contrasting pop of colour. While the majority of Clare’s work is wheel-thrown, she also produces decorative pieces that combine thrown and altered and hand-built components.
Clare will be joining Turning Earth in the Market on Friday 17th May.
Suzy Solley @we.are.clay.uk
Suzy Solley started pottery as a hobby in 2019 as a way to relax, but recently quit her ten-year career in academia and research to work as a professional potter and a therapist. Describing her work as sitting “between functional and frivolous”, Suzy often includes ornate knotted handles to her pieces and is inspired by puzzles, infinity shapes and Celtic designs from her homeland of Scotland. Having worked for years in girls and women’s rights, she is also inspired by feminine shapes and silhouettes.
Suzy will be joining Turning Earth in the Market on Saturday 18th May.
Dimitrios Papailias @sway.ceramics
Born in Athens, Dimitris Papailias delved into various artistic mediums before discovering his passion for ceramics. He crafts sculptural vessels with a meticulous, hand-formed approach drawing inspiration from the organic rhythms of the natural world and evoking memories of his homeland’s landscapes and seascape.
Dimitris will be joining Turning Earth in the Market on Saturday 18th May.
The Taste of Turning Earth exhibition for London Craft Week 2024 will be open daily at Old Spitalfields Market 10.30-5.30pm.
