It’s a Doodle
We talk to professional doodler Frankie Curtis ahead of the launch of our free August Doodle Room
From August 13th to 23rd, you can get creative at 103 Commercial St with the help of Frankie from Curtis Creationz and pens provided by our friends at POSCA.. We caught up with her to chat about the life of a doodler, inspiring people to express themselves and the East London art scene.
What do you and how did you get into it?
I am a professional doodler. I have been drawing since childhood, always copying and being inspired from cartoons that I used to watch! Now I get to create murals globally, take part in exhibitions and fun events, teach and run workshops and more – every day is different!
What’s the concept of the Doodle Room?
It is a room where people can really let themselves go, create with no boundaries or judgement, and fill the room with crazy ideas and characters – Like taking a step into someone’s brain and imagination!
What kind of doodles are you expecting to see from people that visit?
I hope that people will let go and draw everything they can think of; animals, food, film and tv characters – no limits!
Can kids get involved?
Yes of course, I want people of all ages to join in. A lot of people lose interest in drawing as they get older and I want to bring it back and use the amazing ideas and creativity that children can provide.
What’s your favourite thing about the East London art scene?
The variety of art is incredible – there are so many styles and ways to create. I always feel inspired and so happy to be part of something so cool as the art scene in London, the talent is unmatched.
Where will you be eating and shopping while you are here at Old Spitalfields Market?
I am super excited to eat here, it offers some of the nicest food vendors in all of London. I’m looking forward to Fen, they make their noodles fresh, as well as the Dumpling Shack – I love Asian food! I’d also like to check out ArtPlay for some of their art themed events.
What are you up to next?
Every month is different for me – I have a few jobs lined up. The next one is a mural for a coffee shop in Barking – if you follow me on my socials @curtiscreationz you can see everything I am up to.
The Doodle Room is a free, drop-in only space and opens from 11am – 4pm on Tue 13 – Fri 23 Aug (103 Commercial St
London E1 6BG)
