“We don't need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions doing it imperfectly”
- Zero-Waste Chef, Anne-Marie Bonneau
When it comes to plastic free living, we know there is no quick fix but, here at Old Spitalfields Market, we know it’s the direction we want to be headed. For a shopping center like ours, filled with many different retailers from global brands to independent traders, it won’t happen overnight, but if we don’t start taking proactive action, it won’t happen at all. So watch this space as we head off on our plastic free journey. To kick things off, we are delighted to welcome the Zero Waste Summer Market, as a beacon to the simple ways we can bring plastic free living into our daily lives.
Bamboo Straws by Jungle Straws
Anyone making even the smallest move towards more sustainable living agrees plastic straws are absolutely no go. Jungle Straws have created sustainable bamboo straws and earth-friendly products that are not only beautiful, but also ethically cultivated and crafted with pride. Made in Vietnam, Jungle Straws directly oversee all aspects of their manufacturing and supply chain operations in person, developing ethical relationships with the artisans and farms they work with.
Vegan Soap Bars by Bottega Zero Waste
Remember good old fashioned soap? Well thanks to the move away from single-use plastic and brands on a zero waste mission, it’s back and better than ever. Bottega Zero Waste pride themselves on creating vegan soap bars that are not just good for the environment, but also amazing for your skin. Their Oat Milk Bath bar is ideal for relaxing in the tub, while their Green Reboot is an energising bar that’s great for the shower.
Bamboo Toothbrushes by Greener Habits Co
If the struggle to find a decent equivalent to your environmentally awful plastic toothbrush is real, look no further than Greener Habits Co. They’ve developed an attractive collection of toothbrushes that offer something for everyone, with a range of bristles, from Extra Soft to Medium, in a great selection of colours. Pick your favourite as well as grabbing some ‘TruthPaste’, a handmade and natural alternative to big brand toothpastes, that comes in a cute and reusable glass jar.
Repairable Socks by Socko
Not only do Socko create sustainable socks, made in the UK from craft yarn that is no longer serving a purpose, they are also on a mission to re-teach the lost art of darning. They encourage “visible mending”, supplying a free mending kit with every pair of socks, that includes a cool contrasting colour yarn and darning needle, so you can wear your repairs with pride.
Visit the Zero Waste Summer Market here at Old Spitalfields Market on Saturday 13th July from 11am – 6pm.
