Supal Desai: How to Spend Your Weekend in the Market
Following her guide to weekdays at Old Spitalfields Market, travel lifestyle blogger Supal Desai now brings you a list of her must-do at the weekend market.
Old Spitalfields Market is the perfect place to go on the weekend when you’re looking for a true local experience. The market is full of life and it makes leisurely strolls that much more fun. I started visiting Old Spitalfields Market on the weekends when I first moved to London because it easily connects to other exciting parts of East London from Shoreditch to Columbia Road Flower Market! So, here’s my hit list for what to do at Old Spitalfields Market at the weekend.
Weekend Markets
Like any market enthusiast, I’m a big fan of shopping at a market for anything vintage, home related or ethnically crafted. Old Spitalfields Market is the best place to come when looking for unique presents that tick any or all of those boxes! On alternating weekends, you will find two markets. The Londoners Home showcases hand designed art prints from independent artists curated by one of our longest-serving and most successful traders, Louie Eden Brown whilst Urban Makers is a market of unique handmade and ethical gifts. Urban Makers also run their workshops at the Market.
Old Spitalfields Market Workshops
After perusing the market, make your way over the any of the weekend workshops! Located just above the market, they cover anything from crafts to skill building. It’s great fun with a few friends or just to do something on your own and meet new people. Check the upcoming workshops here. And don’t forget you can run your own workshops here – more information here.
Get Dolled Up
If you’re celebrating a special occasion, then OSM has you covered! You can get your makeup done at either MAC or Chanel both located on Commercial Street. Then go on to get a fringe trim, hair cut and/or blow-dry at Pimps & Pinups! I went for a simple fringe clean up and the talented hair stylist added some loose waves into my bob!
Blixen
If you’re looking for a fun dining experience or a date night idea, then Blixen is the place to book! The moment you walk inside, you’re captured by the aesthetics of the converted bank and that’s not where the design stops. The food is gorgeous as it is delicious sourcing some of the best ingredients. Whatever you do, make sure you go for some cocktails!
The Butchery
If you’re prepping for a Sunday roast at home, then make sure to stop by The Butchery. Located on Lamb Street, The Butchery was a runner-up in the 2018 Observer Food Monthly Award’s Best Independent Retailer. They source some of the best meat cut only in the traditional butchery way. Be sure to pick up your meat from here along with broth, stock, beer and wine to go along with it!
Lululemon Sunday Yoga Session
Sunday morning yoga sessions are the best way to kick off a balanced week ahead. Lululemon hosts Sunday morning yoga sessions right outside the store on the Market’s Mezzanine, and to make it even more special… they’re complimentary too! Get there early as spots fill up quickly.
