Drop In: Deconstruction of the shoe with Joseph Cheaney & Sons
Live Demo for London Craft Week 2022: Shoemaking and Leatherwork
Join English shoemakers Joseph Cheaney & Sons for live demonstrations as they take apart a pair of their handcrafted Goodyear Welted shoes, displaying the quality of construction.
Everyday between the 9th and 15th of May staff will be on hand to answer any questions, or if you’d like to try a pair on!
It takes around eight weeks and 200 hand, or hand tooled, operations to make a pair of Cheaney shoes, as they pass from one ‘room’ (as the various departments are known) to another.
Cheaney still cut and close all uppers in their factory in Northamptonshire, just as they have done since 1886. Individual pieces of upper and lining leather are sewn together to make the upper. This is an intricate and complex process that varies according to the style being constructed, and involves a high level of hand-eye coordination from the shoemaker.
Head into the store to see for yourself the craftsmanship the goes into every shoe.
